Images appeared on Chinese tech forum A9VG last night showing what looks to be a trimmed down Xbox 360 motherboard. Is it real? Well, there are a number of factors to consider.
With the launch of Natal this fall, Microsoft has the perfect opportunity to re-launch the Xbox 360 brand with a all-new look to its console. The company also probably wants to get rid of the console’s dreaded “three red lights” error as it looks to penetrate the casual market. There has also been loose talk from Microsoft executives before about a “new Xbox 360″ coming in 2010.
Microsoft, as usual, said it doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation. If there is a Xbox 360 Slim in the works, you can probably guess we’ll hear about it this summer, perhaps even at E3.
The pictures below indicate that both the CPU and GPU processors have been combined into one chip, allowing for less heat to be generated and, of course, a nice cost reduction for Microsoft.
Perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but Microsoft is also hiring for a Motherboard Design Engineer for the Xbox console, which is responsible for “aggressive cost reduction of the console throughout the life of the product”.
I have to admit, I was happy for PS3 owners when they finally got their “slim” version. And I, a self-loathing 360 owner, could actually get excited about this one. You see it in the article above: “less heat”. We can only hope that there might be a sturdier disc drive, and no more “Red Rings of Death” (although there will be – inadvertently – new issues) .
Not to mention, maybe we’ll get neat new toys to choose from. Maybe more USB ports? Choice of color? Maybe we’ll even get lucky and get some PS3-like features (not unlike the PS3 Move being “borrowed”) such as an upgradable hard drive slot. Although that’s doubtful as Microsoft just released the 250GB HD to the public; but there are plenty of other features from other units to be desired. If this does turn out to be true, then Microsoft’s poker face could either be: not so good (Microsoft executives have already mentioned a new 360, and it turns out to just be slimmer), or quite good (a whole slew of new features with a new look, that could possibly be marketed as a “Natal Bundle” in the holiday season to come). It could even be sprung at the upcoming E3. Now that would be a surprise and there would have been just enough of a leak to get people excited so that Microsoft could take E3 by storm, yet again, this year.
I’ll say it again, I don’t consider myself a “fan boy”; I try to stay neutral on every subject that comes my way. I just want to play games on my day off like everyone else. I’m just here to do some of the legwork for you. The whole point is, I’m just staring off in to space, day-dreaming as usual. But it’s fun to dream.

A job posting on Gamasutra.com, whose tagline is “The Art & Business of Making Videogames” and concentrates more on the personnel and technique side of gaming, may shed some light on things to come. The want ad, posted by Sucker Punch Studios, is for an industry professional with “3+ years commercial programming experience” and the position would be “to implement the on-line component for our forthcoming AAA title“. The only franchises Sucker Punch is known for other than inFAMOUS would be the early Rocket: Robot on Wheels game and the Sly Cooper series, which we’ve heard nothing of to this point. So this begs the question- could inFAMOUS 2, which is all but confirmed at this point, feature competitive multiplayer, co-operative, or both? Click the link below for the full posting.

“The games were running at 1280 by 720, and the expected issues became reality. “The input lag on UT3 was so noticeably bad with the mouse and keyboard that I would call [the] game simply unplayable. I often found myself overshooting the mouse movement by half a screen, moving well past my intended target because the cursor didn’t stop when I did.”
The problem wasn’t nearly as bad when played with an Xbox 360 controller, but Shrout found the graphics were sharper when played locally. The graphics aren’t anything to phone home about, the lag was noticeable, and the resolution wasn’t set very high. When something sounds too good to be true… that’s usually a hint about the final product.”

First off, they were the first people to break the news and story for every single Kingdom Hearts game ever made, long before it was publicly released. They released all the news for Metal Gear Solid 4, Resident Evil 4 and 5, and pretty much every Square Enix RPG ever made. Interestingly enough, back in 2003, they also broke The Wind Waker’s story roughly two months before release, and no, prerelease copies were apparently not out yet stateside. So the question needs to be asked: If the community there has been right so many times with rumors, then why can’t they be right this time around? They very well could be, so step inside and see what was revealed – as confirmed by one of our own translators.

According to a Sega document, PlayStation 2 and Dreamcast titles are coming to the PlayStation 3.
“Marked as confidential, the Sega document–which contains notes derived from a meeting with SCEA on August 5th–clearly states that Sony wants to sell ALL PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation Network including Grand Theft Auto Vice City, older Sonic titles and more. There’s also mention that Sega plans to advertise on television in the same manner as EA Madden and NCAA spots by incorporating the PlayStation 3 controller (for co-marketing money).”
“In addition to the PlayStation 2 emulator, the Sega document also reveals that Dreamcast games are on the way to the PlayStation Network as well. “If we provide a list of DC titles, SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively,” Sega reports. “If we give them a long period of exclusivity, they’ll give us more marketing support.” This may also mean that Dreamcast games could also make their way onto Xbox Live, with Microsoft snagging a few “exclusive” titles of its own.”
“The Sega document also reveals that Sony plans to launch the motion controller March 2010 in Japan, followed by a Spring release here in 2010; the bundle and pricing details were estimated to appear on September 1. SCEA will provide Sega with a list of IPs that the company expect to work well with the new technology including Virtua Tennis and London Olympics.”

IDF kicks off today and while Intel is was busy getting ready for the party, AMD has stepped in and snatched just a smidgen of the limelight by announcing that it is readying a hexa-core processor aimed at consumer desktops.
The chip, codenamed Thubon, is set for release sometime next year and according to Maximum PC, it will be backwards compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ motherboards. Maximum PC cites AMD officials who Monday said that the heavily rumored Thurbon was “a done deal.”
Thurbon will feature all six cores on a single 45nm die, feature an integrated DDR3 controller and is expected to have 3MB of L2 and 6MB of L3 cache. No word on branding or clock speeds as of yet but MPC reports the Phenom II X6 as a possible label.

It’s kind of hard for Nintendo to deny this one, even though when presented with the image and information above, Nintendo gave their old ‘rumors and speculation’ statement. This ad is set for September 27th, which means that we will almost assuredly be seeing a nation-wide price drop by the end of this month. And yes, the system still comes with Wii Sports.

According to Jim Reily of IGN, Capcom filed a new patent that would seem to have relation to the Okami franchise. Reily writes: “But continued fans of the title may want to cheer up, as there seems to be, well, some kind of Okami news. Capcom recently filed a trademark for ‘Okamiden,” which as Siliconera points out, could be short for “Okami Gaiden” (Okami Sidestory) or “Okami Densetsu.” Could we see something soon? Capcom is currently planning the original game’s release for October 15th on Wii, so this could have something to do with that, but let’s hope not. Time will tell.
