New Xenoblade Media From Monolithsoft
From rpgland.com:
Just when it was thought to be dead, the Xeno family’s soul still burns. Revealed at E3 2009 for Nintendo Wii, under the code name Monado, the game is set to be released in Japan this year. It will be developed by Monoliftsoft under the direction of who I generally call The Xenoguy Tetsuya Takahashi. Not much news except the official website, which is nothing more than a splash page and pretty music.

Attention Phantasy Star Universe players,
We regret to announce that the PC and PlayStation2 servers for Phantasy Star Universe will be closing as of this March 31st, 2010.
SEGA would like to extend its sincere thanks to those who have played on the PC/PS2 servers over the past several years. The final update for PC/PS2 servers will be this January 29th, 2010, which will start the long-awaited MAG+ event. This event will receive the same updates & web support as the event on the Xbox 360 servers. Please note that after January 29th 2010, no new PSU subscriptions will be available for purchase for PC/PS2. Those who are subscribed as of that time will be able to play, for free, until service closure. The schedule is as follows:
• January 29th 2010: MAG+ event begins for PC/PS2 and Xbox 360 servers.
• January 29th 2010: No new PC/PS2 PSU subscriptions will be available for purchase.

For those who play the Xbox 360 version of Phantasy Star Universe: SEGA will continue to support, in full & with regular updates, this version of Phantasy Star Universe. This includes bringing currently unreleased and anticipated content to the XBox 360 servers. We will be able to provide more details on future Xbox 360 PSU content over the coming weeks and months.
While we are sad to see the PC/PS2 version of Phantasy Star Universe end, the year 2010 is the 10th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online — and this server / service closure is helping to pave the way for bigger and better things for the Phantasy Star franchise in the very near future!
Thank you all again for the support and great times together with us here at SEGA playing PSU! We look forward to seeing you again in our new adventures!
Anyone with a valid account will be able to play free from January 29, to the closing on March 31.
I spent some time in PSU online a while ago, and enjoyed it. Online is where it really recaptured that Phantasy Star Online feel that I miss. Might just have to reinstall and say goodbye.

GoG timer up. The big news is…
In a landmark deal for the DRM-free digital distribution movement, Activision Publishing Inc. is bringing a wide range of classic games to GOG.com!
It’s now official, we’re bringing you the biggest announcement in GOG.com’s history – Activision with it’s wealth of PC gaming gems has joined our DRM-free family. With the announcement we’re revealing first two classics which should be instantly recognizable to any fan of good, old games: Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Other games from the Activision catalogue will be unveiled gradually in the coming weeks, so expect more from this publisher during Month of Activision on GOG.com!
How they managed to get Actiblizz to go along with drm free is beyond me. Arcanum and Gabriel Knight are two fantastic games, and Activision has a killer back catalog they’ve been sitting on. More are on the way!

Emulation/Romhack/Homebrew showcase: Dragon Quest 5 Translation
A new translation just hit the scene today, and its a good one.
The PS2 remake of Dragon Quest 5!
From the Projects Website:
Of unique RPGs, this one is about as good as it gets. 12 years after its original Super Famicom release, Square Enix astonished its fans with this worth Playstation 2 port of the game. Dragon Quest 5 is best know for its engaging story which spans three generations. The hero is forced to choose a spouse from either a sexy rich man’s daughter or his tomboyish childhood friend. Dragon Quest 5 is truly a classic and we want you to enjoy the best version of it.
The patch can be downloaded from the official site:

What Do You All Think About A Retro-Game Group?
I had a thought today about possibly starting a retro-game group that would meet on the weeks opposite the show. We could set up a play limit(by using a FAQ and governing to what point we should play that week) so that those who are unable to make it could catch up through the week. I was simply having a browse today and came across ol’ Oni Link here and had the desire to play Majora’s Mask again(as I believe the new Zelda this year will resemble it). Adventure/platformers are more than likey the best candidates for nights such as these, so post here with your comments/feelings. We could meet and voice chat on Skype where those of you who do not own an N64 or Wii could play via emulator(I will provide the links if necessary).
Emulation/Romhack/Homebrew showcase: Front Mission 5 fan translation
I’m an avid fan of the emulation/homebrew/romhacking scene. Many great games, conversions and fan translations come out of the scene, and i figured i’d stop being greedy, and share some of my favorites.
Today its the Front Mission 5 fan translation. I am an avid fan of the series, but the 4th one left a bad taste in my mouth. Front Mission 5 turned the series around, unfortunately, it never left Japan. Apply this patch to the Japanese version of the game for a full english translation!
From the projects website:
“After 2 years in development, 2000+ pages of dialogue and thousands of hours of work, the team is proud to announce the availability of the final patch for Front Mission 5: Scars of the War – today on the 4th anniversary of the game release.”
The patch can be downloaded from the official site:

PS3 finally hacked by homebrew devs.
Iphone homebrewer Geomod has made a significant breakthrough in hacking the PS3. heres what he had to say recently on his blog:
“I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.
3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system
Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.
Shout out to George Kharrat from iPhoneMod Brasil for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long

As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.”

Mysterious countdown on GoG.com
A countdown timer has been added to the main page of GoG.com ending on 1/28 with the tagline
“Expect the unexcelled.”
Guesses as to what this could mean can be found in this thread:
Lukasz Kukawski in a recent interview had this to say:
“Our goal is to have all Good Old Games in the catalogue and we’re doing it, step by step. I believe that in the near future GOG will offer games from all the biggest publishers in the world. With the nearest announcements planned for the first quarter of 2010 we’re making a huge step in this direction.”
Any Guesses as to what this could mean? I for one hope that it brings some of the sites most wanted games (System Shock 2 and Planescape: Torment) to GoG. I’m sure no matter what, its going to be a treat!
