Square Enix’s latest RPG, Chaos Rings, has burst onto the iPhone/iPod Touch scene with a roar. Developed by MEDIA.VISION(known for their work on the Wild Arms series), Chaos Rings is a traditional turn-based JRPG dungeon-crawler that can be found in one of the most unexpected platforms. Even more peculiar is the app’s early success- even at a premium price, the game edges out some fairly stiff competitors. Here are the US App Store’s top 10 for this week(in order):
- Chaos Rings- $12.99
- ZombieSmash- $0.99
- Monopoly- $4.99
- Bejeweled 2- $2.99
- Call of Duty: World at War Zombies- $9.99
- Plants vs. Zombies- $2.99
- Words With Friends- $2.99
- Angry Birds- $0.99
- Doodle Jump- $0.99
- Street Fighter IV- $0.99
So what, if anything, does this information say about the holes in genres on Apple’s handheld platform, and for that matter, the demographic that it caters to? Apparently there IS a place for a traditional Japanese role-playing game experience in territory previously thought to be dominated by casual and puzzle gaming.
