We’d love for you to join The Gamesmen in celebrating Episode 100 and toast to whatever the community selects as our Game of the Year, plus say farewell to Steve as he takes his leave from the world of podcasting! It should be a night of great fun and camaraderie!

Hey JSS! No XCom? At all?! From none of the Gamesmen? How?
Looking at your shortlist, 5 out of the 8 have “2” at the end of the title – showing that 2012 was the year of the sequel. On top of that Need For Speed was sequel but they just dropped the naming convention – could we say (harshly, probably) that 2012 was just another by-the-numbers rehash of titles from an industry devoid of ideas & playing it safe? I’m not saying Borderlands 2 is bad – it’s just more, bigger Borderlands, which is a good thing as it’s great but at the end of the day, it is another FPS.
So we have XCom, yes it’s a reboot but of a game so old I bet most gamers either dont remember it or never played it on the Amiga / 486 back in the day. Plus it’s a turn based strategy, not exactly the formula for a surefire hit – especially on the ADHD consoles. Screw it up & the old timers will be raging, so this game was a bit of a gamble – creatively as well as financially. And look at it – it’s bloody marvellous! It’s proper old skool hard but with that 2012 polish – a real breath of fresh air.
Gamesmen – I disappoint….
I’ll be bringing this very topic up during the live show!
