Right, let me state right here that while I will attempt to write about every game in my Dirty30 there is a- let’s face it- massive chance that I will completely and utterly fail to get anything other than this written!
With that out of the way I have just finished the first game on my Dirty30 list and that game is:
Ratchet & Clank
Yep, the PC guy has been playing on a PS4 and you know what? I freaking loved it!
Insomniac Games have given us not just a re-release or HD remake but a completely new version of the original built from the ground up. What a job they’ve done, fantastic lighting, character models and vistas make this one of the best looking games -on PS4- that I’ve played this year. The utter chaos on-screen when in a large battle is amazing. I found myself staring at the amazing amount of bolts flying towards Ratchet in amazement. Unfortunately a couple of times this did make the PS4 chug a little but there were a ridiculous amount of particles on-screen.
Along with the brilliant visuals (not shown by any of my terrible screenshots unfortunately) you get a great, well told story, smooth controls, excellent sound production and some damn crazy weapons. Like the Pixelator, a gun which transforms your enemies into low res pixelated versions of themselves, or my favourite weapon; The Sheepinator which – as you might guess- turns your enemies into harmless sheep! All of the weapons level up as you use them and can be upgraded with active or passive effects which are well worth exploring.
It’s not all third person platforming and shooting though, there is a spot of flying too. Not all that much, which for me was fine as this was the one area I felt the controls were a little off. Fortunately you don’t have to be a hot-shot pilot as these sections are fairly simple, just shoot and try not to hit things!
Then of course there are the sections where you play as the stoical robot; Clank which fall into one of two categories: 1, Puzzle solving where you use Clanks’ abilities to control other robots, enabling you to create bridges, power doors etc. to get you to new areas.
2, Running away from things, where you erm. . . run away from things. .
All in all, as I stated earlier, I loved spending my time playing Ratchet & Clank with its bright, colourful worlds, rich character models and engrossing gameplay. The only thing that made it better for me was listening to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack whilst playing! If you get the chance be sure to pick it up, you will be rewarded with a rich story and a rewarding weapons system and smooth controls. Truly a game to treasure and worthy of any gamers collection.
So that’s the first game scratched off my #YoLG Dirty30 list. If you want to know more about the Year of living Gamegerously be sure to check out my earlier post. What’s the next game I’ll complete? I have no idea. Why not check out my list and tell me what you think I should finish next?
